信仰と火

The FAITH AND FIRE series of paintings are done in acrylic and oil. There are three different sizes of canvases in the series: 28” x 22”, 24” x 18” and 20” x 22” inches. All canvases were painted in April 2011 with additional painting work done in September 2019. The “Reached Jerusalem” canvas is oil and is smaller: 13” x 9”. It was painted in 2010. I can provide frames for gallery shows. FAITH AND FIRE is available to be shown in museums and other public and sacred spaces. The series is also for sale as a single unit without frames.

「信仰と火」の作品はアクリルと油絵具で描いています。キャンバスには３つのサイズがあります (71.12cm x 55.9cm) (61cm x 45.7cm) (50.8cm x 55.9 cm.)。2011 年の４月に９枚の絵を描き上げ、2019 年に修正を加えました。「エルサレム到着」は2010 年に描き上げた油絵でサイズは他の作品より小さいものなっています。ギャラリーに飾るために額縁をつけることも出来ます。「信仰と火」は美術館や神聖な場所のためご提供させていただければうれしく思います。また一冊の本として提供することも出来ます。

It is unsettling to think that people were crucified on land just an hour away from my home. The fact that it was centuries ago does not erase the brutality of it, or the shock of learning about it for the first time. The devastating and inspiring history of Christianity in Japan has interested me for many years. I know that, at least in some part, my interest is a result of growing up in Nagasaki Prefecture or “a little Rome” as it was called during the 1500s because of the large population of Catholic converts.

Painting the history of Christianity in Japan was not something that I began haphazardly. Was it daunting? Yes. Was I hyperaware of my weaknesses in tackling it? Yes. But immersing myself in the stories of the Early Christians and Martyrs was something that I wanted to do. And sharing their history with others has been more satisfying still.

FAITH AND FIRE is a series of nine canvases that chronologically depict Christianity in Japan during the 15th and 16th centuries. FAITH begins the series as the first missionary, Francis Xavier, arrives in Japan. FAITH is expanded with canvases two and three showing the proselyting and prosperity of the missionaries and the believers. The next five canvases are FIRE with depictions of the persecution, torture and execution of believers. FAITH concludes the series as angels welcome the faithful martyrs into heaven.

An additional painting, REACHED JERUSALEM, compliments FAITH AND FIRE but is not part of the central nine canvases. It can be included or excluded from gallery displays as desired. The painting depicts Japanese convert Petro Kibe Kasui arriving in Jerusalem—the first Japanese Christian to make the trip. His remarkable life story includes becoming a Jesuit priest, exile, studying in Rome, returning to Japan, martyrdom, and beautification by the Catholic Church in 2008 which is the step before sainthood.

数世紀前、私の家からそう遠くない場所で人々が磔にされていたと考えるのはあまり心地良いことではありません。そのような残酷な事があった日から数百年たったからといってその事実は消えませんし、私が初めてのその事実を知った時のショックも消えることは無いでしょう。私は啓発的かつ悲劇的なキリシタンの歴史に長年興味をもって来ました。私が生まれ育った長崎県は１５００年代、非常に多くのカトリック教徒がいた為「小さなローマ」と呼ばれていました。そのような地で生まれ育ったことがキリシタンに関心を持った理由の一つだと思います。

キリシタンの歴史を描くことは突然思いついたことではありません。とても大変なプロジェクトで自分に出来るかどうか不安でした。それでもキリシタンの歴史を描くことに対する気持ちは強く、このプロジェクトにどうしても挑戦したかったのです。また日本のキリシタンの歴史を人々に知ってもらうことはとても意義ある事に思えました。「信仰と火」は１５世紀から１６世紀に渡るキリシタンの歴史を年代順に９枚のキャンバスに描いた作品です。

最初の三枚の絵は信仰に関する絵で、一枚目の絵は日本で最初にキリスト教を布教したといわれるフランシスコ・ザビエルが日本にたどり着いた時の様子を描いています。続く２枚の絵は日本で多くの人が教えを聞き、宣教師と信者の努力を通してキリスト教が繁栄していく様子を表しています。次の５枚の絵は炎に関する絵で、キリシタンに向けた迫害や弾圧、苦しみの様子が描かれています。最後の一枚は殉教者達が死後の世界で天使達と出会い天国に迎えられる様子が描かれています。「信仰と火」には追加の絵として「エルサレム到着」がありますが、メインとなる９枚の絵には含まれていませんが、将来的にギャラリーに追加するかもしれません。ペトロ・岐部・カスイは初めてエルサレムを訪れた日本人で「エルサレム到着」は彼が初めてエルサレムを訪れた様子を描いています。彼はキリシタンの両親のもとに生まれ、敬虔なクリスチャンとして育ちました。ところが江戸幕府によるキリシタン追放令により１６１４年にマカオへ追放されてしまいます。その後、ローマへ渡りイエズス会の司祭に叙階されます。日本から追放されて１６年後、彼はようやく祖国に帰り迫害されていたキリシタンを励ます為に日本各地をめぐり信徒を励まし続けました。彼は最終的に捕縛され信仰を捨てなかった為に処刑されてしまいました。そして彼の死から数百年たった２００８年、彼はローマカトリック教会から聖者に次ぐ地位である福者に列せられました。

TV PROJECT: COMMISSIONED IMAGES FOR KALEIDOSCOPE PICTURES (USA)

I was fortunate enough to create two commissioned images for the TV project Messiah: Behold The Lamb Of God . I created a pencil + digital image of 'The Battle In Heaven' as described and requested by Kaleidoscope Pictures. The image was used for the 2nd episode in the 7 part series: Premortal Savior. I also created an all-digital image of 'The Third Temptation of Christ' for the 3rd episode: Power and Authority. BYUtv has aired the series multiple times nationally and all of the episodes are available for free streaming.
